Walang Plastikan Campaign
HBC, Inc. has started using biodegradable plastic bags in its stores since 2009, but to strengthen its environmental beauty advocacy, Tuesday and Thursday are reserved for Mother Earth with its Walang Plastikan campaign, which educates customers to prefer using paper bags or their own shop bags instead of plastic bags to contain their purchases. The campaign is being implemented in all hbc stores nationwide.
Customers who will still opt to use plastic bags on a Walang Plastikan Day, will be asked to pay for the plastic bag. With this initiative, hbc will be saving more than 100,000 plastic bags a year that may clog our waterways. This might look like a small effort but hbc believes it will have a great impact in the future.
To further strengthen the Walang Plastikan Campaign, hbc has started offering reusable bags that customers may bring with them when purchasing in bulk.
Aside from limiting the use of plastic bags in hbc stores, the company is also transitioning into more eco-friendly packaging for some of its products under its tween cosmetics line, Allue My First and its natural skincare line, Body Recipe.
Support for the Earth Hour
March 31, 2012 marked the beginning of hbc's participation in the worldwide switch-off event with the joint effort of its over 200 stores. The company's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint goes beyond Earth Hour as it implements light-saving policies in its corporate centre wherein employees are encouraged to switch off lights and aircon units on break hours plus a campaign to re-use scratch papers for internal business forms and memos. Store-based employees, on the other hand, do their share by conserving electricity and water consumption in their day-to-day operations.
Top management is dedicated to pursuing social development initiatives through immersions with communities such as Gawad Kalinga wherein employees are envisioned to be a partner for sharing the company's values through regular visits and promoting sustainability through livelihood programs in partnership with the Ang-Hortaleza Foundation.
hbc Gives Back
Bloodletting activities are conducted in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross each year where hundreds of employees take part as a personal pledge for they believe that nothing could be more beautiful than being able to save a life through the blood one was able to share.
The company has put in place a donation drive for displaced families due to typhoons, and other natural calamities reinforcing the culture of volunteerism among employees, each with their own contribution in bringing help to their fellow Filipinos.
